2005 MEDELLÍN AWARD FOR BEST PRACTICES TRANSFER IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN

The Ibero-American and Caribbean Forum on Best Practices, the Habitat Colombia Foundation, and the city of Medellín have joined forces to promote the effective transfer of Best Practices for the improvement of living conditions in urban areas of Latin-American and the Caribbean. This will be achieved through the sponsoring of an award open to all actors working in development in the region. The Award will be presented in December of 2005 and consists of US$10,000.

The main objective of the Award is to put into practice the knowledge acquired by actors in urban and territorial development, and to facilitate the exchange of ideas, experiences, and lessons learned from best practices.

Award winners must demonstrate a high potential for transfer, address widespread regional phenomena, and stay in keeping with the guidelines and commitments of the Habitat Agenda, the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations, and the strategic guidelines of the Development Plan of Mayor Sergio Fajardo Valderrama’s administration, entitled “Medellín: a Commitment to all its Citizens”.

Each of the winning initiatives will also take part in a pilot transfer project in a neighbourhood or community of Medellín, especially in those places where the local administration is developing what are known as “Strategic Projects”, which take a holistic approach to the improvement of the quality of life of the poorest citizens.

Local administration bodies, private companies, non-governmental organizations, academic groups, and the community will all benefit from the transfers. They will participate actively in the implementation of the projects, providing economic and human resources as well as technical cooperation.

The follow-up to the transfer process in Medellín will be an important topic of study for the members of the BLP and the Forum, as well as being the starting point for a Plan for Effective Transfers of Best Practices in the LAC region.
