The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) is working to build and serve a worldwide movement of local governments to achieve tangible improvements in global environmental and sustainable development conditions through cumulative local actions.

ICLEI is a democratic membership association of 400 local governments and national and regional local government associations that have made a unique commitment to sustainable development. The Council serves as an advocate for local government before national and international bodies in order to increase understanding and support for local environmental protection and sustainable development activities.

A worldwide movement of local government, Council Members and hundreds of other local governments are engaged in ICLEI's international campaigns and programs. Through its campaigns on Local Agenda 21, climate protection, and water, and programs such as environmental management and eco-procurement, ICLEI helps local governments generate political awareness of key issues, build capacity through technical assistance and training, and evaluate local and cumulative progress toward sustainable development.

As the international environmental agency for local governments, ICLEI serves as an information clearinghouse on sustainable development and provides policy guidance, training, technical assistance, and consultancy services to increase local governments' capacity to address global challenges. As part of this initiative, ICLEI and UN-HABITAT are working together to gather, review, evaluate, and disseminate best practices through the Internet-based Thematic Centre on Local Government Initiatives for Sustainable Development and Urban Environment.
