Capacity Building
The Urban Management
Program in the Arab Region (UMP-ASR)
The Urban Management Program (UMP) was launched in 1986 by the United
Nations Development Program (UNDP) ,the United Nations Center for
Human Settlement ,the world bank and several bilateral partners
(Currently UK, Sweden ,Netherlands and Germany). The UMP Arab States
region (UMP-ASR)-covering seven countries including Jordan ,Lebanon
,Morocco , Syria ,Tunisia and Yemen- was created as a tool to direct
cities to serve as effective contributors to social progress , cultural
and economic growth. The Urban Management Program was established
with the aim of building capacity in local governments and strengthening
the contribution that cities in developing countries can make towards
sustainable human development. The program has been extended on
a pragmatic basis on a number of occasions and has evolved significantly
over its seventeen-year, four-phase lifespan (details are accessible
on our online database). Furthermore, the site includes participating
countries, the problems addressed by the program in every country,
the methodology used in every stage and the outcomes that have arisen
as a result of regenerating cities toward urban development .In
addition, selective best practices have also been indexed and made
available through the website.
