| Summary |
This practice, based in Valdorba in the Navarre Region, began in 1990 and is still continuing. The aim is to generate income in a depopulated rural area that is currently undergoing sufficient demographic growth and to create jobs especially for unemployed people at risk of labour exclusion. It is based on the economic development of local organisations through the rational use of local environmental resources.
A system for the sustainable management of mycological resources has been implemented, which is reproducible in underdeveloped countries and depressed rural areas, and creates jobs for women, as well as an eco-tourism project and various plans for the use of natural resources.
A geographical information system (GIS) has been set up for the area’s mycological resources with regulations proposed for the rational use of mushrooms and truffles.
Achievements include home help for old people, job creation for young people, women and over 45s, and setting up an assembly of leaders, rural agents interested in the development of Valdorba and their local representatives. Work is also carried out to facilitate access to housing and the renovation of unique buildings.
Local authorities with wide political differences have managed to join forces to organise two fairs (reproducible) for local truffles, as well as another joint base service and tourism initiatives. This practice brings them together in a shared project: a supra-municipal administration centre. Local people have also formed spontaneous groups for specific actions.
Considerable experience has been gained in the group-working dynamics of all the agents involved in this practice.
