Bremen partnership award 2004

Solar Laundrette, Ecological Textiles and Renewable Energy for Farmers: India, Ukraine, Canada, USA, Great Britain, Brazil and Germany among the seven finalists for the 2004 international ‘bremen partnership award’

Last February, the 2004 international ‘bremen partnership award’ kicked off with 168 applications from around the world. Today a shortlist of seven finalists has been drawn up. Just one of them will be handed over
the award by the patron Professor Dr. Klaus Toepfer, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on 23rd September 2004 at the City Hall in Bremen, Germany.

Right up to the deadline, the international expert committee debated the merits of each project via the online application platform iDelphi©, considering ecological, economical and social criteria. In the last few hours of the third evaluation phase there was a frenetic transfer of data between all continents and the server in Bremen. At the end of the day, a clear decision for seven exceptionally promising projects emerged. On 23rd September 2004, a prominent international jury with members from the fields of politics, science and industry will announce
the winner.

The finalists include a technology transfer centre for sustainable development from Kerala, India; a network for local environmental sustainability from Nikolaev, Ukraine, in cooperation with Great Britain which supports other communities in introducing environmental management systems. Another finalist is Messrs. E+Co. from Bloomfield, USA, which sets up renewable energy systems in rural areas in Brazil in order to encourage sustainability for farmers. A solar-powered laundrette from Toronto, Canada was also able to qualify as a finalist as well as an “eco-village” from Beddington, Great Britain which creates all its electricity from sun and wind power.

One of the two German finalists is Messrs. Otto GmbH & Co. KG who, in cooperation with the Öko-Institut in Freiburg, produces and distributes environmentally-friendly textiles for the mass market. The second German
project, Messrs. Waterman GmbH has qualified in cooperation with the Humboldt University in Berlin. The company hopes to win the award presenting their latest development, the dip stick®, a self-regulating
drip irrigation device for the home garden as well as for large scale use in agriculture.

The 2004 international Bremen Partnership Award is aimed at projects
that include cooperation between at least one business partner and a
partner from science, politics, local authorities or non-governmental
organizations. The award was initiated by the Senator for Construction,
Environment and Transport, the Bremer Aufbau-Bank GmbH and the RKW
Bremen e.V. which also coordinates the ‘partnerschaft umwelt
unternehmen’, an environment network for companies and government
authorities.
