The Local Initiatives Awards were established to give international recognition to outstanding environmental performance by local governments working in cooperation with other community partners. These new Awards were developed through the joint efforts of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives and Saitama Prefectural Government in Japan.

Award-winning Practices for 2000

The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) and Saitama Prefectural Government, the co-sponsors of the awards have announced the winners of the Local Initiatives Awards for the Year 2000.

More than two hundred local governments and their community partners submitted applications, with one winner and three finalists being selected in each of five categories: Atmospheric Protection, Freshwater Management, Governance for Sustainable Development, Land Resources Management, and Waste Management. The Selection Committee asked that all applicants be congratulated for the outstanding work that they are doing. The winners and finalists that they selected are listed below. For Excellence in Atmospheric Protection

For Excellence in Freshwater Management

Winner: Chengdu, China Chengdu Fu River and Nan River Comprehensive Revitalization Project
Finalist: Puerto Cortes, Honduras Protection and Management of the Basin of Tulián River
Finalist: Shenyang, China Sustainable Shenyang Project
Finalist: Sumida City, Japan Promotion of Rainwater Utilization
