Join the Stockholm Challenge Award 2003-2004

The Stockholm Challenge Award – one of the world’s most extensive IT awards of its kind - is now open for submission. For the 6th time, the City of Stockholm welcomes IT entrepreneurs from all over the world to join this celebrated awards programme for IT projects using information technology for the benefit of people, society and the environment. The aim of the Stockholm Challenge is to identify and reward innovative use of IT within areas such as citizen empowerment, education, health care, economic development and environment. The online entry form can be accessed at http://www.challenge.stockholm.se and the submission process is open until November 1, 2003.

The Stockholm Challenge has over the years gathered thousands of excellent IT projects, all using IT in innovative ways to improve daily life for their users. Projects compete in six categories, in areas where information technology has great influence on people's lives; e-Government, Culture, Health, Education, e-Business and Environment. The Stockholm Challenge offers a unique opportunity to join a global network of IT experts, entrepreneurs and enthusiast, working in the field of user-oriented and driven development of IT applications.

It is very important to stimulate and encourage local initiatives in different parts of the world, says Ms Annika Billström, Mayor of Stockholm. By participating in the Stockholm Challenge Award projects get a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience with others, and they have also given us an unique opportunity to learn. It is highly stimulating to join the challengers at the final event and meet with all innovative and creative project representatives, IT entrepreneurs and other experts from all over the world. During this big networking activity many contacts are made, new partnerships established and new networks developed.

We will now continue to develop the competition and create opportunities for better use and spread of the knowledge that is collected in the Stockholm Challenge, says Billström.

The finalists will be announced on February 2, 2004, and the final event is planned to take place in Stockholm in May 2004, once again gathering some of the worlds best IT entrepreneurs and expertise for a great networking experience, crowned by the Prize-Giving Ceremony in the Stockholm City Hall. The days include seminars, Best Practice exhibition and other activities that support sharing of knowledge and experience.

The jury evaluates the projects on the basis of four basic criteria: Innovation, User Need, Transferability and Accessibility. Every project is also evaluated in relation to its own economic, social and cultural context, and its potential to improve the society in which it operates. This enables projects from both developed and developing countries, with different economic circumstances, to compete on equal terms, regardless of their financial situation or other resources. The benefit of the user is always at heart!
